Welcome Message

The Department of Arts and Social Science Education (DASSE) is one of the four new Departments carved out in 2011/2012 session from the defunct Department of Education. The other Departments are those of Science and Mathematics Education, Educational Psychology and Counselling, and Educational Foundations and Curriculum.

However, DASSE has always been part of the Faculty of Education. This Faculty, which initially consisted of two Departments - Education and Library Science, took off as an independent and full-fledged Faculty on May 10, 1968 when it had its first Faculty Board under its first Dean, Professor H. Impecoven. Before then, the Department of Education had existed as one of the Departments in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. At that point in time, the Department of Education offered programmes in Education, Library Science and Post-Graduate Diploma in Education


Teacher education is the priority concern of DASSE which is anxious to produce the teachers needed to expand Nigerian secondary education and teacher training colleges. Manpower needs in the area of qualified professional teacher production will be met by training students who are to hold positions in administration and academic fields after graduation. While training and conducting research in educational methodologies, the Department yearns for and makes/creates cultural, linguistic, political, religious and intellectual opportunities to enable it closely follow and fully participate in globalization as the new world civilization.

Our Objectives

DASSE was founded upon five broad objectives as follows:

i. To assist students offer or take up to two teaching subjects to guarantee their marketability;

ii. To train and provide graduates who have a broad background of general Education;

iii. To produce students who are positively oriented towards the teaching profession;

iv. To train students who are qualified to teach professional and specific subjects in secondary schools and teacher training colleges;

v. To furnish students with necessary expertise and capacity to conduct research, and to serve in educational instruction, analysis, advocacy, and criticism of arts and social science; and

vi. To guide students towards becoming competent, self-reliant, and able to participate in national and international development.
